Broken capillaries

When you have Broken Capillaries on the face it is often difficult to know what to do or even where to start! It is a condition that affects many people, but it is also not often addressed.

What are broken capillaries?

Small blood vessels in the skin which carry blood throughout the body, start to weaken and over time develop small gaps in the capillaries and become damaged, giving them the appearance of small red veins visible on the surface of the skin.

What causes broken capillaries?

What often causes broken capillaries is the weakening of the blood vessels, overheating and an impaired skin barrier. Many women start to experience broken capillaries as the reach menopause, as the skin’s natural barrier function starts to deteriorate, dehydration and dryness increase and the processes of collagen, elastin and the connective tissues slowly break down.

One common thing which can further aggravate broken capillaries is the topical application of ice to the skin. While the cold temperature can feel soothing to the overheated skin, what you can’t see is that it is silently causing further damage to the skin.  When ice is applied to the face, the body wants to regulate the temperature and reacts by increasing the body’s temperature internally, in turn making the capillaries more red and inflamed.

What can I do to minimise broken capillaries?

With the advancement of technology and extensive research, there are now methods of not only minimising the appearance of broken capillaries, but also preventing them in the future.

IPL Vein removal

Also known as Intense Pulsed Light, IPL is a light based laser treatment which uses a particular wavelength to directly target the haemoglobin (the part that gives red blood cells their colour) in the broken capillaries, resulting in the reduction of broken capillaries and flushing skin. With a series of treatments, the skin improves from the inside out as the redness is destroyed.

Elixir

During the treatment of existing broken capillaries, it is also important to repair the condition of the skin which causes them in the first place. Inflamed skin, menopause and sensitivity can all onset damage to the blood vessels and Exel’s Elixir is formulated to treat these conditions, prevents future broken capillaries and diminishes existing ones.

Exel Elixir is the one of a kind serum cream formulated to repair aging skin on the cellular level.

Exel’s cosmetic labs developed the revolutionary molecule Lipmalbex which is highly concentrated in antioxidants, proven effective to delay the signs of aging and suitable for the most sensitive of skin.

Lightweight and easily absorbed, Elixir contains thousands of antiaging molecules of Lipmalbex: A new complex exclusive to Exel is the synergistic combination of the four liposomes: Resveratrol, Vitamins C, E and Troxerutin.  The unique combination of pure ingredients, in a low molecular weight delivery system deeply penetrates the skin, dispersing the actives directly to the target skin cells to which gives brightness, vigour and a rejuvenated skin appearance.

Elixir is beneficial to many concerns associated with aging including skin hypersensitivity, broken capillaries, menopause, lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness, dehydration and the slowdown of cellular renewal. Due to its low molecular weight, not only can Elixir be used on the face and neck, but also all around the eye contour.

The Power Ingredient which treats and prevents broken capillaries is Troxerutin.

Troxerutin is a flavonoid which is effective in strengthening and repairing blood vessels, while improving and normalising their permeability. It is a natural, plant derived ingredient which is extracted from the Japanese Pagoda tree.

Troxerutin helps to activate circulation, improving the supply of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells.

What steps can I take to prevent further broken capillaries?

Small adjustments to your lifestyle can prevent the conditions that lead to broken capillaries. Here is a list of what you can do on a daily basis to help your skin.

Avoid extreme temperatures on your face: Drastic changes in temperature on the face affect blood circulation and can make the skin erupt in redness. Hot showers commonly cause flare ups, as do ice cubes. Even though ice cubes feel cold on the skin, they make your body react internally by stabilising the temperature, dilating blood vessels, increasing heat in the tissue and your chances of having broken capillaries.

Avoid strong acid peels on the face: Acid peels have a lot of skin benefits, however they are not suitable for everyone. When you are prone to broken capillaries, acid peels can irritate and make your skin sensitive to heat.

Avoid heavy makeup: While you may feel tempted to wear heavy makeup to hide broken capillaries, it actually creates the conditions for broken capillaries to occur. When the skin is blocked with makeup, it is unable to breathe and function correctly. Heavy makeup also retains heat in the skin.

Avoid thick and heavy skincare products : Much like heavy makeup, heavy skin creams can block the skin and retain heat. When creams are very thick or contain a lot of oils and petrolatum derived ingredients, the skin becomes overheated and cannot release the heat. A light textured formula, with high quality active and carrier ingredients is necessary.

Avoid hot or spicy food: When eating, make sure to allow the food cool to a reasonable temperate as this also increases the body’s heat. Have you ever noticed your face flushing after eating hot food? This can be risky if you are prone to broken capillaries. Spicy food has a similar effect, and should be avoided when possible as well.

Skincare Routine:

Cleansing: Cleansing is a very important step to allow your skin to function properly. If you are prone to broken capillaries you need a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin, but helps it repair itself. Foaming cleansers are best avoided for this skin type as they strip your natural oils, then you need to replace the moisture you lost afterwards.

Exel Cleansing Lotion with Vitamin E, doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils and doesn’t affect the skin’s barrier. It gently removes impurities and makeup and is safe around eyes.

Preperation: Have you ever had your skin drink up moisturiser very quickly, leaving you feeling parched shortly after. The skin needs solids and liquids, just like when we eat and drink. The skin needs to be properly hydrated to be able to absorb creams and serums into the deepest layers of the skin, rather than drinking up all the moisture at the surface. This is why we need toning lotions. Not only do they balance the skin’s ph after cleansing, but also hydrate the skin’s surface to prepare and allow for the penetration of serums and creams into the skin.

Exel Herbal Purifying and Toning Lotion, with witch hazel contracts blood vessels makes skin comfortable and reduces heat and prevents product loss by over application.

Treatment: Apply Exel Elixir over the face and neck with a pressing motion to push the serum cream into the skin without friction, which causes overheating. This formula is designed to be used as a one step serum and moisturiser.

Protection: During the daytime finish with your selection of Exel Sun Protection Cream or BB cream.

With a natural tinted coverage, non-oily breathable texture and antioxidant skin care properties, you won’t feel sticky, nor will you need to worry about applying foundation.

The sun can overheat and burn the skin, so make sure to protect your skin.
